Shortly after Abraham Lincoln was elected as America's 16th President, the country erupted into Civil War. Often called "The War Between the States," it remains the bloodiest time in U.S. history. The fight between North and South was the first war to be well-documented with photographic evidence. Because pictures took so long to develop, however, newspapers continued to rely on sketch artists who drew what they observed. Today both sources of primary information, largely housed at the Library of Congress and the National Archives, provide direct proof of the horrors of war.

Lee's surrender, John Wilkes Booth fired a single shot at the President, mortally wounding him.
